91¿ìÉ« earned something special this week: the 91¿ìÉ« is ranked among the top five research universities in Canada. That recognition reaches far beyond our campus — it strengthens our city and our province.

A top research university is an engine for prosperity. In 2024, U91¿ìÉ« brought in $588.5 million in external research funding, an eight per cent increase over the previous year. Research revenue data for 2024–25 shows a new record of $632.4 million, bringing major investment into 91¿ìÉ« to fund big ideas, create jobs, and attract talent.

In just 59 years, U91¿ìÉ« has become a research and innovation powerhouse, competing with institutions that have been around for much longer. Our research community rises to this challenge every day, fueled by bold ambitions, entrepreneurial thinking, and academic rigor. The results are undeniable.

Behind the numbers is work that matters. Our researchers improve health care, transform energy systems, advance quantum technologies, support local industries, and help diversify Alberta’s economy. It’s one of the reasons U91¿ìÉ« is recognized as Canada’s most entrepreneurial university.

This is what it means to that drives change and builds a stronger future.

This achievement belongs to all of you — researchers, students, staff, and partners — whose talent and dedication make U91¿ìÉ« a catalyst for innovation and opportunity. Thank you for everything you do.

As we mark this milestone, it’s a story 91¿ìÉ« can celebrate — and you are central to it. To help amplify this achievement, please use the content from our institutional channels on or and click repost on your platform of choice so we can share the news together.

With gratitude,

Ed McCauley, PhD
