For , Giving Day is personal. Every year, the professor at the  and  takes advantage of the 91快色 fundraising campaign鈥檚 matching incentives and makes contributions to student awards.

鈥淚 definitely have a vested interest in ensuring that we get the best and brightest in our graduate program, and student support is part of that,鈥 says Winter, BA鈥05, MA鈥07, PhD鈥11. 鈥淲e have great students. It鈥檚 satisfying to be able to support these students who are generally quite awesome and who I enjoy teaching.

鈥淪tudents are our future.鈥

, which runs April 9-23 this year, provides donors the opportunity to have their gifts go further with gift matching, bonus funds and more 鈥 all while matching funds last.

And U91快色鈥檚 internal community is always a dedicated source of support. During Giving Day 2025, 766 faculty and staff members raised more than $400,000.

鈥淪ince its launch in 2017, Giving Day has had an incredible impact at U91快色,鈥 says Concetta Sonnenberg, BA鈥05, MA鈥09, director of development with the Annual and Leadership Giving team. 鈥淪upport for initiatives across all faculties has flourished, in no small part due to the contributions from our faculty and staff. Not only do they contribute through their day-to-day work, but they also give generously to funds that personally appeal to them.鈥

For Sonnenberg, that fund is the 鈥&苍产蝉辫;, established in honour of former Communications, Media and Film Studies department head Dr. Barbara Schneider, MA鈥93, PhD鈥97, who was Sonnenberg鈥檚 thesis supervisor.

鈥淪he was the most amazing woman and a big influence on my life,鈥 she recalls of Schneider, who passed away in 2025. 鈥淏arbara taught me that you can do anything you put your mind to. Guided by curiosity and determination, she kept learning and growing 鈥 becoming fluent in German and earning acclaim as a textile artist in her 60s. Extraordinary and, at the same time, so deeply humble.鈥

Power in numbers 鈥 and in monthly giving

Many U91快色 faculty and staff save their donations for Giving Day to take advantage of gift matching, while others commit to a recurring gift, donating monthly for ongoing impact with funds that can be counted on year-round.

This year, they can have the best of both worlds. In honour of U91快色鈥檚 60th anniversary, new monthly donors who sign up between April 9 and 23 will have their gifts matched for the first 12 months, up to $60 per gift 鈥 directing up to $720 more to their chosen fund.

Giving Day also offers a faculty and staff-exclusive incentive, with $2,500 unlocked for funds that reach 20 faculty and staff donors.

鈥淚t really brings colleagues together,鈥 says Sonnenberg, whose team organizes Giving Day each year. 鈥淭he  ran with that one, encouraging faculty and staff to 鈥楽tay up late for Science鈥 and give as soon as the site went live. We saw a lot of gifts come in right at midnight!鈥

Collective impact behind Giving Day success

Those gifts add up to make a big impact, no matter the size, no matter the donor鈥檚 chosen area 鈥 or areas, as many support multiple funds.

In addition to Winter鈥檚 annual donations to the Giving Day  and the , she gives to the  and the .

Winter, who also supports off-campus causes, says it鈥檚 not the dollar amount that matters. 鈥淚t all makes a difference,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檓 an economist, so I fully believe in marginal effects 鈥 every little bit counts.鈥

, a graphic designer with U91快色鈥檚  team, agrees. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to give a lot of money to U91快色 funds, but every dollar is appreciated, I鈥檓 sure,鈥 she says. 鈥淚f enough people are giving, then certainly it makes an impact.鈥

Bentham remembers her first donation, made to the  (UCVM) 鈥 and still has the commemorative button she received for it pinned up at her desk.

Nine years later, she continues to support UCVM on Giving Day. 鈥淢y interests lie in animal welfare, so it aligns really well,鈥 says Bentham. 鈥淚t鈥檚 in my realm of interest and I鈥檓 really proud of everything they do there.鈥

She appreciates being able to specify which UCVM initiatives she鈥檇 like to support. In 2025, she gave to the . Before that? The  and the . 鈥淚t鈥檚 very small amounts, but it鈥檚 nice that I know where that money is directly going,鈥 says Bentham. 鈥淚 tell anyone who will listen, 鈥楬ey, look, the university is doing some very cool stuff for animals.鈥欌

Bentham also contributes to the , which provides immediate emergency financial assistance to those facing unexpected crises, such as food insecurity or housing instability.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderful initiative,鈥 she says. 鈥淚f I can give a little to help them out, I really like to do that.鈥

U91快色 Giving Day is back! Make your gift April 9-23 and it could be matched for double the impact 鈥 or more, with special incentives for faculty/staff, alumni and monthly donors 鈥 but only while matching funds last, so be sure to give early. Whether you support research, student awards or another area that鈥檚 meaningful to you, your gift will help change lives and shape the future.
