Elder shares the significance of names聽in Feb. 10 webinar

The significance of names in Indigenous cultures will be the topic of the of this semester鈥檚 Elders Teaching Series on Feb. 10. 

The session features Elder Bruce Starlight from Tsuut鈥檌na First Nation, in a discussion moderated by Joel English-Dubois, Indigenous research assistant and sessional instructor for Haskayne School of Business.

鈥淎 name is significant in the way it is given. All of us are different and the community supports each child鈥檚 growth,鈥 says Starlight. 

Hosted by the Office of the Vice-Provost (Indigenous Engagement), the Elders Teaching Series focuses on traditional knowledge, lived experiences and approaches to healing with respect to cultural well-being, intergenerational trauma, and Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, connecting and being. 

The series offers oral teachings and reflections from Elders living in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta in an accessible way.
